Batwind Meets Floating Wind

Norwegian oil company Statoil, in collaboration with the Scottish government and other partners, has launched Batwind, a battery storage solution for offshore wind energy.

A 1 MW lithium battery—with the same capacity as 2 million smartphones—and 5 floating wind turbines will be installed at the Scottish Hywind farm. Currently under construction, it will be the first floating wind farm in the world—floating because the turbines do not need to be anchored to the seabed. This new system will optimize energy transfer from wind farm to grid. According to the partners, the new storage solution will aid the development of such next-gen renewable energy system. Initial electricity production is scheduled for 2017.
