Breweries in the U.S.: The revival of an old art form

BRAUMAT offers support across the entire production process as well as numerous special features

Breweries in the U.S. are currently experiencing a boom, and there is a great deal of special appreciation for the traditional art of brewing beer. The brewmasters of small craft breweries, or microbreweries, are being supported by the Braumat process control system from Siemens.

Combining a nostalgic touch with state-of-the-art technologies, local microbreweries in the U.S. are doing a booming business. A growing number of producers are focusing on the ancient art of beer brewing, and Americans appear to be welcoming this development. Over the past ten years, the demand for beer from microbreweries has increased annually by 20 percent. In contrast, the demand for industrially produced beer has dropped slightly.

Two Roads Brewing Company: The “nostalgia factor” and closeness to the customer

Two Roads Brewing Company is a microbrewery located in the northeastern part of the United States in Stratford, Connecticut. It focuses on genuine craft beer, closeness to the customer, creative marketing, a strong “nostalgia factor,” and regional sales. Visitors can watch the beer brewing process and then taste the beer afterwards in the beer garden. The brewery now sells ten different kinds of beer, and this secret recipe seems to work. In addition to its own brands, Two Roads was able to take on twice as many beer orders from other breweries than originally planned just six months after it started production. In Connecticut, more than 850 businesses sell beer from Two Roads.

Braumat supports breweries

The brewery’s success can be attributed in part to Siemens technology for the process industry. “Siemens has been active in the brewing industry for over 100 years,” says Rüdiger Selig, a Siemens expert on brewery automation. The turnkey Braumat automation systems from Siemens are supporting brewmasters in their work.

In the past, automation was delivered with the production plant itself – and for small breweries like Two Roads, that was simply too big. The solution is called Braumat Compact, and its main advantage is lower entry-level costs. Investing in a Braumat Compact pays for itself beginning with an annual production volume of approximately 5,000 hectoliters of beer. The package includes support and a training hotline.
