SPACEX UNVEILS SPACECRAFT THAT CAN FLY TO AND FROM SPACE
The Dragon V2 Couldn’t Come at a Better Time For the US
SpaceX, the space exploration company founded by Elon Musk, has recently unveiled its Dragon V2. The Dragon V2 represents a major step forward for the company as it is their first spacecraft capable of transporting humans to and from space. The new spacecraft will eventually feature as part of the multi-billion dollar contract between SpaceX and NASA.
The launch couldn’t have come at a more important time for the USA as relations with Russia go from bad to worse due to the ongoing situation in the Ukraine. Currently, the Russian Soyuz spacecraft is the only way for American astronauts to get to and from the international space station. And, with the Dragon V2 program due to come in cheaper than the current contract with the Russians, its looking like NASA has made the right decision.
The new Dragon V2 has not opted for the traditional passive method of orbit re-entry via parachute. Instead it will use as series of eight Superdraco engines to control its descent to earth. Musk, believes that it will ultimately be able to land almost “anywhere in the world” with the “accuracy of a helicopter”.
