Mace wins £120m Camden Lock scheme

Mace has been contracted to manage the £120m redevelopment of Camden Lock Village in London

Market Tech, which owns and manages the main Camden Markets, has selected Mace as main contractor for the project that is also known as Hawley Wharf.

The Camden Lock Village contract involves construction of more than 170 new homes, as well as retail and market spaces, around 9,175 m2 of employment space and landscaping public realm.

Market Tech has also signed up McLaughlin & Harvey to build an infant and junior primary school and nursery as part of the Camden Lock Village development. The school will be the first part of the scheme to be delivered and is expected to open at the start of the academic year in September 2016.

Market Tech group property director Mark Alper said: "We are delighted to have appointed two very experienced, high quality contractors to deliver Camden Lock Village. It is an exciting time for us to start seeing the delivery of our vision - a new school for the community, much needed homes, new shops and of course some market space, alongside significant improvements to the canalside. Both Mace and McLaughlin & Harvey recognise the importance of this project to us, to the local communities and to Camden."

AIM-listed Market Tech was set up by Israeli software entrepreneur Teddy Sagi, who still owns a third of the company.

Mace chief operating officer Gareth Lewis said: “This is a fantastic win for Mace to rejuvenate one of London's favourite visitor destinations and deliver an iconic project for the capital. We have a strong track record for the delivery of cultural projects in London including the British Museum's World Conservation and Exhibition Centre, the Tate Modern and the London Eye. Mace was based in Camden for much of the past 25 years and we have great affection for and knowledge of the area. We're therefore delighted to have this opportunity to bring our residential expertise and focus on innovation and high-class delivery to the benefit of the local communities."

At the same time as announcing the contractors for Camden Lock Village, Market Tech have also announced the appointment of Piercy & Company as architect to take forward a planning application for Camden Lock Market. Acquired in the autumn of 2014, Camden Lock Market comprises a mix of market stalls, shops and restaurants.
