NCC to build negative-net-energy school

NCC is to build a Norwegian school that will be a pilot for a ‘negative net energy’ standard

Brynsengfaret School in Oslo will be built under a contract valued at SEK270m (£21m). The 11,700m2 school will be for grades one to seven and will include an auditorium with space for 840 pupils.

The school’s ambitious environmental profile is intended to make the building a reference project for future schools in Norway and other countries. It will be built as a passive building, as well as being a pilot for ‘negative net energy building’ (nNEB) standard, which is set to be used by public buildings in the EU from 2017.

To achieve the environmental requirements, Brynsengfaret must fulfill several tough demands. Solar cells will be integrated into the facade and the school building will also be equipped with heating pumps.

In the school, both pupils and teachers will be able to monitor electricity production and consumption, giving the project an environmental dimension.
