UCL seeks contractor for £25m Bloomsbury project
University College London has begun the search for a design and build contractor to build a new £25m student centre at its Bloomsbury campus in central London
The contract notice in the EU Official Journal says the brief “calls for a highly sustainable new building that is distinctive, with exceptional design quality, reflecting UCL's global significance whilst not appearing elitist”.
It adds: “It should be a building that is accessible, inclusive, and welcoming.”
The New Student Centre will provide learning space and a student enquiries centre at an entrance to UCL's campus within the Bloomsbury Conservation area. It will be a six-storey structure, including two basement levels. Nicholas Hare Architects is working with the university on the design phase.
The site is flanked by listed buildings and the project includes demolition of part of the adjacent Bloomsbury Theatre to enhance circulation routes around and through the new building.
The university is hoping to see construction start this year, with completion in 2018.
