40 MW WOOD WASTE TO ENERGY PLANT TO BE BUILT & OPERATED BY B&W VØLUND IN WALES

Working with its consortium partner, Interserve Construction, Danish waste to energy technology manufacturer, Babcock & Wilcox Vølund has secured an EPC contract to build and operate a 40 MW wood waste to energy facility near Port Talbot, Wales

The company explained that the Margam Green Energy project will be capable of processing waste wood, including contaminated wood and fuel containing metals, with no pre-treatment.

The plant will have a capacity of 280,000 tonnes per annum, generating 40 MW of energy.

Earlier this week , renewable energy company - Eco2 Ltd - announced the sale of the Margam Green Energy project to investors, Glennmont Partners on behalf of its dedicated clean energy fund, Glennmont Clean Energy Fund Europe II, in a deal worth £160 million.

Wood for the project will be supplied by Stobart Biomass Products Ltd under a long term contract that will bring 250,000 tonnes of fuel to the plant from supply depots in the region.

John Olesen, managing director of B&W Vølund explained that the company selected to build Margam following a competitive tender process.

The company added that central to its success in being awarded the contract is its patented DynaGrate technology, which has also recently installed at a waste to energy facility being constructed by Viridor in Peterborough.

In addition, Babcock & Wilcøx Volund has also signed a contract to provide operation and maintenance services for 15 years.

Last month the Company also signed a contract with Viridor to build their Dunbar Energy Recovery Facility, East of Edinburgh.

Through its design, the DynaGrate is said to give excellent fuel flexibility and project contingency and has the capability to manage changing fuel characteristics over the life of the plant.

“Noting we provide all our own technology, being able to provide O&M services means we can optimise the performance of the plant,” said Olesen. “This has significant benefits to the customer in terms of maximising efficiency, availability and output.”

“This further consolidates our position in the UK market in terms of the range of services we provide and associated capabilities,” he continued.

“We look forward to working with Glennmont not only in terms of providing the plant on time and on budget, but also in ensuring the successful operation of the same,” concluded Olesen Managing Director of B&W Vølund.

The company added that the development of the plant will bring inward investment and jobs to the area, with up to 150 people being employed during construction.
