COUNCIL PROPOSES WASTE TO ENERGY FACILITY FOR NORTHAMPTON, UK
Northampton Borough Council is to consider a plan to develop a waste to energy facility in in Northampton’s Enterprise Zone
According to the council, the proposed new plant would be fuelled by the residual proportion of household waste that cannot be recycled and would otherwise be sent to landfill, thus saving it money.
The council added that its plan would lead to the development of the first be generating facility in Northampton since 1975 when the Northampton power station (pictured) closed
If agreed, the Borough Council said that it would investigate the potential benefits and opportunities that could come from selling part of its Westbridge Depot to a company that would build the new waste to energy plant.
“This could be another exciting Northampton Alive project, creating jobs and bringing investment into our town,” commented Councillor David Mackintosh, Leader of Northampton Borough Council.
“Waste to energy schemes have the potential to solve two problems facing the UK, the need to generate more power domestically and the decreasing amount of available landfill space,” he added.
“This is exactly the sort of initiative we should be exploring as we look to give our town a bright future. But, first we must assess whether this is the right option for Northampton and what the potential benefits are for our town. Northampton is alive with innovation and our Enterprise Zone is seen as a catalyst for business growth we explore ideas like this,” concluded Mackintosh.
The proposal will be discussed by the authority’s cabinet on Wednesday 12 November.
