250,000 TPA INCINERATOR BOTTOM ASH RECYCLING PLANT GIVEN GREEN LIGHT

Proposals for a 250,000 tonne per annum incinerator bottom ash (IBA) recycling facility have moved forward in the UK.

The proposal from Ballast Phoenix (BPL), to take ash from Viridor’s waste to energy plant at Runcorn (read WMW article), have been given the green light by Halton Council.

Despite receiving 10 objections to the facility – according to a report by the Liverpool Echo – the development control committee met and gave approval to the plans.

The £452 million Runcorn development uses refuse derived fuel (RDF) to produce 70 MW of power.

BPL processes the ash to recover residual metals, which are sent for metal recycling, with the remainder used to create an aggregate for use in construction.
