$107M SANITARY LANDFILL & RAIL TRANSFER SYSTEM TO BE BUILT IN COLOMBO, SRI LANKA

A Sanitary Landfill to be constructed in the Puttalam District of in Aruakkalu, Sri Lanka will receive solid waste from the city of Colombo transported by train from a transfer station at Meethotamulla

According to its official news portal, the Sri Lankan government has decided that the proposed Sanitary landfill will be constructed in keeping with international standards.

The government explained that currently around 700 tonnes per day of solid waste is collected in the city of Colombo. When combined with the other urbanised local authorities in the Metro Colombo Region, the quantity of waste collected increases to around 1200 tonnes per day.

As such, the government said that it has been looking for an environmentally acceptable and economically feasible solution for the disposal of Municipal Solid Waste in the Metro Colombo Region.

Accordingly it been proposed to construct a sanitary landfill in Aruakkalu in the Puttalam District.

The government added that the Railway Department has already completed the design work for the rail transportation system and the preparation of specifications for locomotives and rolling stock.

The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the Project has also been completed.

The total cost of the project is expected to be SLR 14 billion ($107 million).
